The Luxembourg Cathedral was built between 1613 and 1621 as the church of the Jesuit College. At the end of the 18th century, it housed the miraculous statue of the Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, the patron saint of the country and the city of Luxembourg. The church was consecrated “Our Lady” and was elevated to the rank of cathedral by Pope Pius IX in 1879. Between 1935 and 1938, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame was extended on its southern side.
